Sign languages are a linguistic way of expression for deaf people. In 1974, Valerie Sutton created her own sign notation system that writes sign languages. This system is internationally known as "SignWriting", which, in Brazil corresponds to "Escrita de Sinais", that makes it possible to write the parameters of sign languages such as handshapes, location, movement, orientation and facial expressions. Such a system is a possible ally in the deaf students’ education process. However, SignWriting is not well known by deaf communities. In addition there are few studies about the impact of SignWriting on the learning of deaf students. The interest of gathering information to enable more conclusive reflections about SignWriting has motivated this study. Therefore, this research focuses on the learning of school subjects using the SignWriting system for high school students from ANPACIN - Bilingual School for the Deaf of Maringá - Paraná, Brazil. In conducting this empirical research, a group of students were taught the basics of writing signs, and the research sought to verify the impact of this knowledge in the academic performance of the participants. As a result, we see a better performance of deaf students in school activities in SignWriting. These results suggest that the writing of signs may represent a tool to facilitate the deaf student's intellectual development. Objectively, SignWriting can act in the psychological field, as a tool for expansion of deaf users' knowledge of LIBRAS and can produce significant cognitive gains, since it is a writing system especially systematized for recording sign languages.
