One of the biggest challenges in the education of the deaf is to provide students with greater autonomy in their studies. Identifying this challenge and proposing an effective bilingual education, the Center for Educational Support of Ipiaú (CAPI), located in the State of Bahia (Brazil), has worked with literacy to deaf students through SignWriting since 2012. This is a specific writing system for Sign Languages, in which a person is able to write signs, phrases and complete texts in any Sign Language of the world (BARRETO & BARRETO, 2012). It was created in 1974 and this system came to Brazil in 1996. Some researches and papers were published such as Stumpf (2005), Capovilla et al. (2006), Silva (2009), Nobre (2011) and Barreto & Barreto (2012). CAPI's work consists of pedagogical support for students with deafness or other disabilities who are included in public ordinary education. In the field of deafness, the specificity is the Brazilian Sign language (LIBRAS) recognized by Law No. 10,436/2002 which determines that the teaching should be done directly in that language or through an Interpreter Translator, as Law Decree 5,626/2005. In the CAPI, the teaching is promoted by bilingual teachers (Portuguese/ LIBRAS). The purpose of this institution by establishing the teaching of literacy through SignWriting is to investigate the acceptance and functionality of this writing system for deaf people, reflecting and strengthening identity, community and culture, as well as developing the communicative competence in various situations in which this person is involved, either by using LIBRAS signaled or the writing and the reading of signs. The project has been attended so far more than 40 deaf students aged between 7 and 35 years old. The work has adopted as theoretical framework the studies of Barreto & Barreto (2012) and Capovilla, Raphael & Luz (2001), among others. The results achieved by the project till now indicate that deaf students have identified himself with the writing signs through SignWriting system. When they are faced with signalized written texts, they have always done attempts to read and understand, even students in adulthood who are at a basic level of proficiency have demonstrated an ease understanding of the SignWriting system correctly by associating grapheme-phoneme. All of them have demonstrated pleasure to performing activities and they have been interested in identifying the written sign through the comparison with the signs that they have already known. This contributes to the education of deaf students because it strengthens the value of their identity, it extends the cognitive ability and the organization of thought. For the purposes of this article, 10 deaf students of CAPI who study SignWriting were interviewed. In their view, this is a unique opportunity in their lives, because the language of signs cannot be signaled only, it needs to be written so that deaf people can also register their opinions, ideas, emotions and intentions by using his own language to interact, as well as to do an easier reading that can be understood by deaf communities and other interested persons. Learning how to write signs through SignWriting is relevant to the intellectual development of the deaf. The students' report indicates that the deaf individual accepts easily to learn the writing of his/her first language through a system that records faithfully the three-dimensionality of LIBRAS and for that reason the understanding of written signs is facilitated and, for being so, learning occurs as natural as the acquisition of the language.
