Brazilian Sign Language (also called LIBRAS) has never had a dictionary like this before, in fact, other dictionaries for Sign Languages in other countries have never reached the classification of an encyclopedia either! Its publication is an historic first, not only in Brazil, but for the world at large.

The result of five years of research at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Sao Paulo, the Brazilian Sign Language Dictionary was prepared by a team of people, directed by editor Dr. Fernando Capovilla. Research was conducted with Deaf instructors from the National Federation of Education & Integration of the Deaf. All sign-entries were edited and approved by the Federation's Deaf reviewers.
