Dear Val,
I was not even going to repeat this story, but reading all the letters on line regarding Gallaudet & possible feelings towards SignWriting. I've decided to share what happen to me with you. feel free to publish if you feel the need, parts or whole. I was not even going to repeat this story, but reading all the letters on
line regarding Gallaudet & possible feelings towards SignWriting. I've decided to share what happen to me with you. feel free to publish if you feel the need, parts or whole. About a month ago I went to a wedding shower of a dear friend. This friend had told me she was excited for me and Nicole to meet another friend of hers, due to the fact this friend she had, knows Sign Language and is very involved with the Deaf here in MI. I indeed met this woman and had wonderful conversation until she saw Nicole trying to write Sign Writing pictures on her napkin. Her whole attitude changed, she questioned me, of where I "got hold of this stuff", and said that she knew of it but her and people at her church feel that is outrageous and so on.... Nicole and I defended our Sign Writing with great vigor. Unfortunately I the only point that she seemed to except was how much it has helped Nicole and her reading and writing level. I remember when people would look differently at Nicole when we first starting signing and now almost everyone can finger spell, there's a big difference from now and twelve years ago. people are much more aware and excepting of Deafness then they were even then.. Maybe the same will happen with Sign Writing. Dawn
