Attached is a diagram showing two versions of the sign for CAT in ASL. These signs were written by Deaf native signers... Notice how they wrote the sign on the cheek rather than under the nose...both are correct...the nose area was the way the sign began, but as years went on, the sign started to move to the outside of the cheek... Research studies show that some signs gradually move to different areas of the face as they are used more and more...the sign for KNOW in ASL is the same...although it originates on the top side of the head, it started to move down to the cheek from the forehead...a natural evolution of signs that comes when signs are executed quickly. The important thing to realize is that there is no "wrong or right" with this...SignWriting can write all the variations of these signs...and they are all used at different times...so just keep writing....and in time hopefully it will be better understood... | |||||
