Hello there!

I'm a graduate student in the Deaf Education Program at Western Oregon
University. One of my teachers introduced me to your wonderful system.
I can think of a zillion ways to make use of this in my future
classroom! Maybe you could supply me with a zillion more ? :-)

Thanks!

Hi Brenda :-)

Ha! A zillion ways to use SignWriting in the classroom...hmmmmm...

I hope you and others will write again with your ideas...

Here is one way...

1. Write one complete sentence, written in two languages, on poster board
and place it above the blackboard. For example, if you are in the USA, the
sentence would be written in American Sign Language in SignWriting, and a
totally separate version of the same sentence written in English beneath
it. The grammar will be very different in the two languages. This gives
students a chance to look at the sentence over a long period of time, and
over time they will begin to absorb the differences and understand both
languages well.

This idea comes from a Deaf teacher of Deaf children, Ritva Bergmann, in
Denmark. Years ago, in 1983, I was invited to visit classrooms of Deaf
children learning SignWriting in Denmark. I never forgot visiting Ritva
Bergmann's class at Aalborgskolen in the city of Aalborg. Her Deaf students
were young children, around ages 6, 7 or 8.

I was very impressed with the way Ritva presented written signs to the
children. There were several posters in the classroom like the one I
mention above. The Danish Sign Language was written in good DSL grammar.
The DSL grammar was obviously quite different than the accompanying "spoken
Danish" sentence.

Please write and give us your ideas :-)
