Teacher's Report From Belgium
Teaching SignWriting to Deaf Children

Today I went to the staff room, which also functions as the computer room.

The pupils worked on excercises with the Flemish Sign Language dictionary on the web:

https://gebaren.ugent.be/visueelzoeken.php

Their excercise was to look up signs by searching by handshape. Then look for all possible signs in the dictionary with that handshape.

They were amazed there are so many signs in VGT (Flemish Sign Language ;) It's really a good excercise to practice parameters as well as making the children aware of the fact that VGT is a very extensive language!

I myself was amazed at how quickly the children understood how to work with the dictionary. That's why I took some photos of the children using the online dictionary.

This is what the excercise looked like: I gave the children a handshape. The children had to search for, and choose 2 signs that use that handshape, and write them on paper. Of course I checked if they knew what they had written down...
